Kentucky medical center outsources management of hospitalist physicians

Sts. Mary & Elizabeth Hospital, in Louisville, Ky., has signed a deal to outsource management of its 16-year-old hospitalist program.

The 331-bed hospital chose Brentwood, Tenn.-based hospitalist firm Cogent Heathcare to provide structure, support resources and leadership to its hospitalist physicians. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Sts. Mary & Elizabeth Hospital is a member of Jewish Hospital & St. Mary’s HealthCare and is the only acute care hospital in South Louisville, an area with a population of more than 176,000.

Valerie Briones-Pryor, the hospital's hospitalist program director, said the facility decided to outsource in order to build a “team-based approach,” and to sharpen the focus on quality improvement and educational resources.

“With expanding demand for emergency and inpatient services, we recognized a need for greater infrastructure and resources for our hospitalists,” she said.

Cogent specializes in the management of hospitalist and intensivist programs at U.S. hospitals.

Jim Panoff, chief development officer of Cogent Healthcare, said the deal with St. Mary & Elizabeth hospital would build on his firm’s relationship with its sister facility Jewish Hospital. He said Cogent’s “System of Care” model would emphasize constant measurement of physician performance indicators.
