The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has extended the deadline for hospitals to submit electronic clinical quality measure data for the 2016 reporting period.

The deadline has been changed from Tuesday, February 28, to Monday, March 13 at 11:59 p.m. PT, to give hospitals more time to submit the data.

Also, due to stakeholder concerns, CMS also intends to modify the eCQM requirements established in the Inpatient Prospective Payment System final rule to reduce the reporting burden.

The eCQM reporting is to determine payment for 2018.

The extension pertains to hospitals and critical access hospitals participating in the Hospital Inpatient Quality Reporting and/or the Medicare Electronic Health Record incentive programs.

CMS intends to include proposals regarding the 2017 eCQM reporting requirements in late spring.

The proposed rule addresses stakeholder concerns regarding challenges associated with hospitals transitioning to new EHR systems or products, upgrading the EHR technology, modifying workflows, and addressing data element mapping, as well as the time allotted for hospitals to incorporate updates to eCQM specifications.

CMS is also considering modifying the number of eCQMs required to be reported for 2017, to shorten the eCQM reporting period.
