BETHESDA, MD – Today, leaders from the business and public policy communities launched a nonpartisan think tank promising fresh solutions to America's healthcare problems.
The Healthcare Performance Management Institute (HPM Institute) aims to advance the study of how organizations can use management theory and technology to improve the country's healthcare system.
"President Obama has issued a call for solutions to America's most pressing healthcare problems, particularly the staggering burden of ever-increasing costs," said George Pantos, Executive Director of the HPM Institute. "We're responding to that call with rigorous analytical work that demonstrates how business and government leaders can use technology to ensure that the healthcare system delivers better patient outcomes at lower cost."
The HPM Institute is the brainchild of several leading private-sector companies that are developing technologies to allow executives to manage their healthcare resources just as they manage their sales or supply chain operations. The Institute hopes to foster an interactive learning environment where forward thinkers can engage with like-minded individuals in discussing alternate and infrequently talked about approaches to healthcare management.
"Executives are more aware of how much they spend on office supplies than they are of how employees are using their healthcare benefits," said Todd Thompson, Chief Technology Officer at Lockheed Martin and a member of the HPM Institute's Advisory Board. "Healthcare Performance Management represents a new technology-driven discipline that can arm companies with the data and tools they need to simultaneously reduce costs and improve employee well-being."
In addition to Thompson, several other prominent executives from Cantor Fitzgerald, IBM, The Men's Wearhouse, WellNet Healthcare and Wells Fargo will be serving on the HPM Institute Board.
