OVERLAND PARK, KS – IPC The Hospitalist Company, a national hospitalist group practice firm, has acquired a Kansas City-area hospitalist practice, establishing a presence for the first time in that region.

The North Hollywood, Calif.-based company announced the acquisition Tuesday of Hospital Inpatient Management Services, an Overland Park, Kan.-based practice with three branches – Midwest Hospital Specialists, Midwest Hospital Care and Peterson Management. According to IPC, HIMS has an annualized volume of approximately 140,000 patient encounters.

The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Adam Singer, MD, chairman and CEO of IPC, said HIMS is an ideal fit for IPC because the practice has shown a commitment to aligning with hospitals and referring physicians.

He said IPC's financial and administrative resources would allow HIMS to acquire even greater market share in the Kansas City area.

Singer said the transition to IPC management would not be disruptive. He said Thomas Simmons, MD, the majority owner of Midwest Hospital Specialists, would continue as a practice group leader, while Sanford Peterson, the head of Peterson Management, will remain in the newly created position of executive director for the IPC Kansas City Region.

"The new era of healthcare reform compels groups such as ours to look for like-minded partners who can help us continue to strengthen our capabilities,” said Simmons. He added that HIMS would improve its competitive position by using IPC's capital and infrastructure support.
