Infographic: Why Americans pay so much for brand-name drugs

October 25, 2011 | Healthcare Finance News Staff

Prescription drugs are more expensive in the United States than in any other developed nation. In 2003, pharmaceutical purchases made up 11 percent of total US healthcare spending, and the amount continues to rise. While these costs hit consumers hard, health systems also feel the pinch, spending more on drugs than any other supply expense. What are some of the reasons behind the astronomical cost of pharmaceuticals, and are there any steps the government could take to make drugs cheaper to US buyers? Check out this interesting graphic from Medical Billing and Coding Certification and give us your opinion.

Charliec15 says: Why Americans Pay so much for Brand name Drugs
October 26, 2011 | 1:16PM GMT

Historically there has always been money for brand names from the Insurance Companies. This is no longer true. My cost for on brand names has gone way up. The Pharmaceutical companies have banked on this and have increased their profits dramatically at our and the insurance companies expense. Doctors are also awarded for promoting brand names when sometimes there is a generic available. Our government has done nothing because they are also involved in making money from these very larger companies. The advantage is with large companies and making profit. The sad part is many suffer when there is no generic. Also now we have the Canadians selling these brand names at 50 to 80% less. Its a money issue and a moral issue. I am not a big advocate of the Wall Street moment, but basically this is where its going if we do not pull it in. Individually we cannot do a thing. In groups perhaps?
