Florida Blue, Moffitt Cancer Center ink accountable care deal
Insurer Florida Blue and the Moffitt Cancer Center on Thursday announced the creation of an accountable care program that will focus on the treatment of cancer.
Under the terms of the agreement, Florida Blue will partner with Moffitt Medical Group and its 330 oncology practitioners across the state to create treatment regimens and quality metrics for common cancers. The multi-year program, which is set to kick off at the beginning of 2013, will see the two parties sharing both claims and clinical data in an effort to improve the quality of patient care.
“Both organizations realize the importance of moving away from the fee-for-service model to one that focuses on quality outcomes, and this arrangement marks a step in a new direction for relationships between providers and insurers,” said Jonathan Gavras, MD, senior vice president and chief medical officer for Florida Blue, in a press release.
Moffitt delivers a comprehensive set of care services for cancer patients from treatment of existing cancers to screening and prevention services. It is the only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center based in Florida.
“This partnership with Florida Blue focuses on the value we provide our patients, and that becomes a positive for everyone,” said Alan F. List, MD, president and chief executive officer of Moffitt in a statement announcing the deal. “I anticipate that we will learn a lot from this new venture and that it will help us to continue to improve cancer care. Keeping quality as our focus ensures that we will continue to improve survival rates for patients battling this disease.”
The announcement by Florida Blue continues what has been a very busy month for the insurer as it looks to widen its scope beyond the bounds of a traditional health insurance company. In the past few weeks, Florida Blue has also announced accountable care arrangements with NCH Healthcare of Naples, Fla. and Palm Beach-based Holy Cross Hospital. In addition, it also announced a bundled payment agreement with Mayo Clinic in Florida for knee replacements and the acquisition of multi-specialty medical practice Diagnostic Clinic, based in Largo, Fla.
